CASM (Cipscis' Automatic Save Manager) allows for an incremental auto-save function specified by a time preset (can also be done manually through a hotkey), allowing you to load a savegame close to when FNV crashed. NV Stutter Remover modifies the game to be more "stable" (more info on its New Vegas Nexus page here). I have personally tried NV Stutter Remover and CASM.

Random Crashes (Random Crashes that tell you FalloutNV.exe has stopped working.)
Place D3D9.dll in the directory that contains FalloutNV.exe. Download D3D9.dll from MediaFire or a similar source. Start the installer in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 and as an Administrator. This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug fromįrom the PC Gaming Wiki's "Fallout New Vegas - Game Crashes Randomly" article: D3D9.dll Replacement Make a backup of Fallout_default.ini, then edit it with a text editor.) ( Source) This is because when the game is launched via Steam, it opens the launcher first, which overwrites your Fallout.ini file with the contents of the Fallout_default.ini file, along with your launcher settings. (Note: In Fallout New Vegas, Most tweaks which would normally go in the Fallout.ini file in Fallout 3 actually need to be made in the Fallout_default.ini file found under the \Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas directory in Fallout: New Vegas. Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3 I haven't had it freeze once since I did this several days ago. You can force the game to only use two of them and it will stop the freezing. 
The game engine has some issues with processors that have more than 2 cores.
